How can a lens front or back focus?

I see that you're correct on the eye-safe part, but all the models I could find had accuracy of +- 1 yard and a weight in the 7oz. range. Plus, it would have to be exactly centered on the lens to work as the OP thought. That would require it to be above the mirror, where the prism lives.
