It seems to be a good lens. So far, I'd say sharpness is a bit better than the Sony, but I still haven't done any real direct comparisons, so that's more opinion than anything.

The OS and HSM do drain the battery faster - no question about that.

I haven't noticed much distortion at either end of the zoom yet - I have a couple pictures on my smugmug site of the same object (side of a playset) at 18 and 250mm (both from very close focus - probably a foot or so away) that might give some indication of distortion.

i'm planning to purchase this for my pentax k2000 but I'm a little concerned about the OS sucking up all the battery.
