How can a lens front or back focus?

I'm sure I recall this being raised on a post before, but I couldn't find it using a search.

How can a lens front or back focus? Wouldn't it always be the camera at fault?

The feedback from the camera AF sensor drives the lens motor and will keep driving it until the light hitting the AF sensor is in focus... no? How can a lens be responsible?

I know it happens but no matter how much I think about it I just can't figure it out... At the moment I feel like the photographic equivalent of the engineer who did the calculations and 'proved' that a bee can't fly.

Help.
