Bring 5D II for Europe trip?

I decided to take this

1)5d MKII
2) 16-35 lens
3) 35 1.4 (for use inside church)
4) 85 1.4 Contax Manual lens
5) 35-135 COntax Manual lens
6) Canon 580II
7) Canon G10 backup

Convince me if i shouldn't carry any of this.

First off, I would listen to your wife. you dont want to be doing a lot of lens changing. as far as fill flash goes, you can usually find shade to stand in and shoot, and the 580 ex is the size and weigh of the 50 1.4 for me. (if not bigger and heavier)

people travel differently. I travel with 5d2, 24-105. I agree with g10 as it is tiny. If I take a second lens its the sigma 50 1.4. the third lens would be 16-35.

given high pixel density of 5d2, you can crop a fair bit. The 24-105 is my walk around as well as museum/ church camera. i would take the is and zoom over two stops of light for non moving objects. the 50 1.4 is just nice for low available night people shots. there you can take the prime ofyour choice.

The 16-35 for me is the best video lens, and also great for wider architechtural stuff. I have never found that I wish I had more reach than 105.

Take your 5D2 and the 24-70L locked on, that's plenty enough to shoot everything you will see. Forget the 70-200 and even the 16-35, 24mm is enough wide to cover each and every ston you will cross.

And don't forget Paris, the city is unbelivably beautiful beginning of the summer !!

my wife said i must travel light. What do you think?
I think she may not understand how important photography is to you. But then again, I know little about her reasons.

I usually bring everything I can possibly carry and my wife enjoyes the time she has to go shopping, to the beach etc. I tag along most of the time or vice versa and we both get the best out of our holidays. But, what works for us may not work for others.

Leaving the wife should save you at LEAST a 45 Kilos...

for sure bring the 5dmkii!
vacations to see such stuff are made for DSLR!

otoh those are somewhat bulky lenses

a 70-200 f/4 IS and so on would be handier (that said i brought my 300 2.8 on my last two trips :) but it did often stay in the car/room of course and 70-300 IS went and 70-200 2.8 stayed home, etc.)

Just get yourself a decent photo rolling carry-on case, and you can
take all of your 5D MKII kit with you on every flight, and not have
it impact your checked luggage total.

Given the great tour you have planned - I'd say taking the Canon kit
is a must!

I use a Pelican case for such trips - it has full padding for the
camera, lenses etc etc, and a custom lid unit that takes my laptop.

All of this in a carry-on sized case, with rolling wheels and a
collapsable handle.

There is only one caveat. Some airline will now limit your carry on to about 5KG.
Call before as you do not want to stow any equipment. It must be with
you in the cabin. I still say, travel as light as possible.
Have a nice trip.

Are you serious that you gonna carry all this weight for 2.5 weeks??? Dont forget the other stuffs like charger, CF cards, storage and so on... If you really want to bring your 5D2, just socket it with the 16-35 and get yourself a 50/1.8 for nearly nothing and call it a day, for all your occasional tele shots, stick to your G10.

By the way, a cheap 270EX is a perfect replacement of your 580EX.

Have a nice trip.
I decided to take this
1)5d MKII is this your only Dslr?
2) 16-35 lens good choice for Europe
3) 35 1.4 (for use inside church) best candid lens but much less versatile than the 16-35 for travel. Low light situations, I would use the dispensable 50/1.8 instead
4) 85 1.4 Contax Manual lens perfectly replaceblae by 50/1.8II
5) 35-135 COntax Manual lens 50/1.8II and G10 much better
6) Canon 580II get a 270EX or a tiny 10 bucks table tripod
7) Canon G10 backup great for tele and snap shots

Convince me if i shouldn't carry any of this.

I travel a lot with my cameras for work and pleasure and keeping
weight down is important. My strategy when I'm on vacation is to have
a "project plan" ie "What kind of pictures do I want to achieve on
this trip"?. (eg candids of people, buildings, cityscapes, etc.).

Then I choose one camera and one or two lenses that are appropriate.
I find that if I have a pre-conceived idea of my personal project at
hand, it helps me to "see" photographic opportunities. Just having a
camera around my neck and wandering around without a specific aim
never produces great images for me; just snapshots.
2.5 weeks for a bulk of big cities with 'jack of all the trades' stock photography approach and bagful of lenses is not my idea of relaxing vacation. Or vacation at all.. I have been taking one prime or zoom for those kinds of trips.

I just got back from Budapest. With the 5D MII, 24-105L, 70-200L, and 50 1.4, 580 EX and a tripod. I actually used only the 24-105L and the tripod. I would strongly reccomend a modest tripod and remote trigger. There are great night shots to be had.

I´ve discovered one usefull rule.

Less lenses = better photos

This year of course, i traveled with and ultralight tripod, 5D + 24-70 + 6 stop ND filter (always with me).

My brain started to think in 24-70 focals the first afternoon, the second day i just had my mind working in compositions and ideas, no "other lenses options" in your head.

results: much better pics than if i brought also the 70-200, much much better than if i aslo brought the 17-40, and brutaly better than adding also some primes to the backpack. :)))))

Also traveling and walking very light gives you the energy needed to try lost of things and move to places you won´t with a fully charged backpack.

Last year i even had my 100-400 with me, when i was thinking about walking here and there to take some different angles, the 100-400 started to talk, "walk there? are you sure? why don´t you stop in this bar instead, sit down, get a beer and just relax?"

Can you kindly share what ultralight tripod did you use? Weight and folded length? For me, this is the hardest choice for backpack travel!

Thanks in advance.

I mainly use 3:
  • Manfrotto 055 for studio use.
  • Giottos MT 9341 fro hiking and normal outside use. Still sturdy but much more light.
  • Slik Sprint Mini GM: That´s the one i use for travel or very long hiking.
Leg´s can go horizontal like in the big ones and the lower part of the center column can be unscrewed so you can place the camera almost at ground level.

It´s ok with a 5d + 17-40 or even 24-70 used carefully and when travelling you almost froget you are carrying it.

A pic so can see the diff in size

Well, I think you shouldn't start four threads in three forums asking about which camera and lens you should take to Europe.

It's also very strange that you would say you already have a 5D2 and lenses but in your other threads you ask if you should take a Sony A900 or a Nikon D3x or a 5D2.

If you actually have a 5D2 you should already know whether you want to take it to Europe or anywhere else, and if your wife says you must travel light, why are you asking in your other threads about whether to take a 5D2 or an A900 or a D3x? None of those would be considered traveling "light".

You should also know that it doesn't matter where you are. It only matters what you want to photograph and whether you want to use a DSLR to do it.

If I had to left one home, it would be the 70-200, for sure.
Especially if it's the 2.8. Too big, not very usefull in big cities.
If it's the 4.0IS, then it makes sense to take it too...

But she's right on one point : you'll probably walk a lot, so be light !

First of all : take the best bag you can. And don't forget you won't want to have your expensive lenses on your back in crowded areas without knowing who can open the bag... I use a slingshot AW200, which is not the most comfortable bag on earth but fits my needs for travel : fast and secure.
