a pixel size physics question

This question relates to the D-3 D700 sensors.

The newer nikon 12mp ff sensor seems to have set a new standard in terms of sensitivity / low noise. So what I would like to know is how close to the theoretical limit are we with this generation of sensors. The limit is I suppose based on the number of photons that will consistantly hit a given sized photosite in a specified exposure time. Of course I realize with advances in image processors, and software we will be able to better remove noise in high ISO images taken with any camera. Is there some technology on the horizon which will make another jump in sensor sensitivity?
