Oh bμgger, you meant use a camera?

I'm not sure about the legality of shooting them with small arms.

Small arms aren't legal here in the UK, whatever you shoot with them. The legal situation is complex, many kids go around shooting squirrels with airguns, catapults, crossbows, etc. Generally, they don't get on the wrong side of the law, though I'm sure there is something they could be charged with. For shooting to eat, the only legal firearm is a shotgun, though I don't know many that eat squirrel. Red squirrels are definitely protected, the grey American Tree Rat not so.

Lately, I've been checking into what we are and are not allowed to do
to sparrows where I live. Those flying mice are excluded from both
federal and Michigan state regulations protecting birds.

We get squirrels, rabbit, pigeons and deer, all of which eat our crops. The local humane solution is to spread around lion dung from the safari park down the road. It is effective, but the solution is worse than the problem.
