Re: Coolpix 990 vs the new SLR generation

I do really like the speed of my new D100, but honestly with a
Sigma 15-30 and a Nikon 28-200 I can't say the focus is faster than
the coolpix - I never had a problem with the focus on the 950,

In normal light, the focus speed is reasonably fast indeed, but the
big difference (at least in my experience) comes in low light
situations. The CP990 often starts "scanning" the whole focal range
several times again, causing it to be very slow. In really low light,
it simply fails to focus, whereas the D100 is still doing fine.
Probably one of the reasons is that Coolpix cameras
use a simple contrast maximisation test on the CCD image for focussing.
I have tested the CP5700 for one weekend, and it does not to seem
to be any better in that respect.
