Looking For Advice/Info On ND Filters

I plan on doing a bunch of hiking this summer and have a few river and waterfall destinations on the short list.

I know to get a nice "ghosty" effect in the daytime, that an ND filter is typically used to get a longish shutter speed.

What I don't know is what brands are good choices and what "powers" are good choices to start out with. Is there a good "all around" power to start out with or do you really just need to get a bunch of them?

I poked around a bit and heard that Cokin ND filters have a bit of a color cast -- was wondering if anyone has had this experience or maybe people were having WB problems.

Any resources or tips would be really great.
