I have always liked seeing member’s photos of their locations. We tend to take our home town’s beauty for granted, but others may see it as different and unique. A variation of this challenge was done back in 2002 and was one of the first challenges. We have many new members since that time so I think it will be interesting for everybody. I surely hope you'll take part and have fun doing it........

Home Town Pride

We have members from many corners of the world. What does your home town look like? What features in your town would you like others to see? Is it the church on the corner, the baseball diamond where the little leaguers are playing, the village ice-cream parlor? What about the local movie theatre, the skyline, the mall, or the park down the street? Mountains, valleys, lakes, historical buildings, etc. Show us something special from your home town.

Please give your submission a title, the more creative, the better. Do not reveal your location until after the voting period. All entries must have a title. The Challenge is open to all members of the Olympus Talk Forum who joined before the beginning of the Challenge period and the photos must be taken with an Olympus digital or DSLR camera. The Host has elected not to submit an entry or to participate in the voting.

The host has decided to drop the rules for this challenge. There are no limitations to creativity using any photo editing software. Imagine this photo will be published in a tourism brochure. Make it look ready to publish……….

Challenge entries (limit 1 per member) must be taken during the challenge period starting Friday, May 22, 2009 and ending at 10:00 PM CST on Sunday, June 7.

Check your time zone. The Host is here:
http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/city.html?n=831

Everyone is encouraged to submit up to two (2) images for the Exhibition Gallery. Exhibition photos DO NOT need to be from an Olympus camera. Exhibition titles may include your location.

Challenge entries and Exhibition Gallery submissions should be sent to the following e-mail address: judyjo1@tds(dot)net ((substitute . for (dot)). The submissions MUST be sized to no more than 800 pixels on the longest side and under 200 kb.

Please use the word “Challenge” or “Exhibition” in the subject heading. The Exhibition Gallery can be viewed here; http://www.pbase.com/otfchallenge/challenge_74__exhibition

Be sure to include your Olympus Talk Forum name and a title for your images. Also, send the photo as an attachment as some e-mail programs strip the EXIF data from embedded images. Images without an EXIF intact will not be accepted.

I'm lglad you chose that topic -- so many neat possibilities!

It'll be quite a challenge, actually, for those of us who live in places outside the English-speaking world to find ways to "disguise" the locations, but that'll be part of the fun of the challenge, I think. Hmmmmm, better get my thinking cap on!

I look forward to seeing lots of imaginative shots!

When I see the lights of my hometown,
I feel like the world stops spinning 'round.

Everything makes sense;
Maybe it's the innocence.

I know it's just a few miles down the road;
I'm getting there as fast as I can go.

I can always find peace of mind
In the lights of my hometown.

from the song by Steven Dale Jones & Aaron Lines

I realize the the technical definition of home town is where you were born and grew up, but for this challenge we're calling where you live now your home town. I'm not sure exactly where you live in Hawaii, but you've got to have some of the most beautiful scenery in the world somewhere close, haven't you? I look forward to your entry with great interest!

And turning loose the bonds of creativity will only add to the subject! Can't wait to see what folks come up with.

Great choice, Judy. And great opportunity for some of the folks out there to get creative with their editing.

'Photography is the art of seeing what others do not.'

Hi, Judy,

Colville, the town, is 5000 folk in a small area, maybe 1 sq. mile. The zip code for Colville is rather large, maybe 240 sq. miles, as 80% of the people in this county live in unincorporated areas. So, my zip code is for Colville, WA, but I don't live in the incorporated area. The zip code even includes other little towns, like Arden. What is the limitations on where and of what I can photograph? Does there need to be some hint of a residential area in the photo?

I'm not even sure where the city limits are but can get that info if we need to stay in the city limits. I live 10 miles outside the city limits of Colville, 7 from Arden, 11 from Rice, my doctor is in Kettle Falls, my vet is in Evans... I give Colville as my address as that is my zip code.

I think we're rather alike when we talk about where we live. We are 12 miles from Iola, out in the boonies. I think if we just say "area", that should be fine. We're actually about 1 mile from a place called Northland, but still have an Iola mailing address. So, I think you're fine if your situation is similar. Do you think we should set a limit of maybe 15 - 25 miles? Or do you just want to stick to "area"? Either is fine with me........

Ji JUdy,

I should have explained. Those are just family folks out enjoying our parks. I love the nice way they relate to each other and how pleased they were to be in the park.

Judy,

I like the subject, should yield some good results, BUT I do need a little clarification.

I live in a city of 4 million, our city is broken up into council controlled districts, then into smaller suburban areas. Will it be OK to determine my home town by the district in which I live which consists of 5 suburbs or should I confine myself to the suburb only in which I live. Either way is OK by me.

Cheers,
John

I'm glad you like the theme of the challenge. I really hope we get good participation. You know, why don't we just say the area where you live. I don't know how big a district is, but if it's very limited, go for the group. If it's a fair size, stick with your district. I realize that's not a very good answer, but I'm in the dark as to what your districts are like. If you have parks, shops, etc. I'd stick to the district. If not, spread out.

Judy

Hometown Pasadena. That's my theme. In keeping with the spirit of your Challenge that I think I'm hearing here, I'll limit my urban landscapes to Pasadena and not all of Los Angeles.

¿Could these images include local townfolk flavor and small town landscapes in sleepy country towns for some people or urban street scenes for city dwellers like me?

I have two shots of Pasadena I can submit for the Exhibit Gallery. Pasadena City Hall and the Coloroado Street Bridge are two of my favorite subjects that everyone here will recognize from my previous posts and my Shadows Challenge Entry. I'll look through what I have and submit two representative shots of Pasadena for the Exhibition Gallery later today.

My wife and I are active in Pasadena Heritage, a volunteer group dedicated to preserving some of the city's charm and historical architecture. This winter day we went to a grand re-opening party for Pasadena's historic Santa Fe Depot rail station. This beautiful old Spanish-style buiding was saved from demoltion as the new Gold Line Metro Rail track and Del Mar Avenue light-rail station was built. The building was moved aside and then relocated back along the same tracks, restored and re-opened as a trendy cafe, La Grande Orange Café. It's a great example of re-using historic buildings in a way that preserves the architecture and history of our past. E-3 and 14-54 mm at 14 mm, ISO 200, F/11, 1/320 sec, manual mode. That's the Mayor of Pasadena on the left, Bill Bogaard. His wife was instrumental in forming Pasadena Heritage 30 years ago.

We just got back from a week of diving in Curacao Island, one of the 3 Netherland Antilles in the southeast Caribbean near Venezuela. It's a very arid island with beautiul beaches and lots of tropical birds. Due to weight restrictions and having scuba gear and uw camera housings and strobes to carry as well, I took the C-8080 and not the E-3. Besides all of the diving we did we spent a lot of time beachcombing. I'll post a few underwater shots after I go through them.

Now I'm back in my home town, Pasadena. I'll be on the lookout for some local flavor, Americana architecture and urban street scenes.

Please send it along with your photos. I will hold the Challenge home towns until after the voting period. But, can list your home town as a subtitle on the Exhibition entries.
