My eyes aren't what they used to be so I really need the help of auto focus. Is there a setting I can use that will turn off the illuminator, yet still allow autofocus? I will be shooting in a church setting and I need to be prepared if they do not allow flash, the illuminator might seem as if I were using flash.

Thanks,
Mike

It still AFs, it just turns off the lamp when you turn it off, not the AF. It may have trouble in dimmer light, like many AF cameras do, but that's it.

If you stick an SB28 or something on there it will use the IR AF assist, and override the lamp automagically. With nothing on it and the lamp off, it still does pretty well with AF anyway.

Best,

Michael Dean

yes it is one of the custom choices.
AF assist off
I dont have a S2 but will be buying on when I get my paycheck (and find one)

but I have an N80 and I always have the AF assist light OFF, it is c* , unless you use a flash, it uses a red lazer light that works perfectly fine.
hope this helps

I'll be getting an S2 soon and I already own an SB25 flash which has infra red focus assist. I presume the S2 will be able to use this if as you say it uses the IR assist on the SB28?

Yes. The lamp only works when autofocus is set to Single Servo. So the quickest way is to just set autofocus to Continuous Servo and the obnoxious light will go out.

Yes, I'd assume so, too.

Agree, but Single Servo will give you Focus Priority, whereas Continuous Servo will give you Release Priority. Probably resulting in some unwanted out-of-focus pictures. Switching the Assist light off might be the better idea.

Cheers!
