Nikon tele lenses gaps

Hello, a few months ago I switched from Canon: I bought a D700 and sell most of my Canon gear.

For the D700 I have the 14-24 2.8, 50 1.4 and 105 2.8 VR. But I'm missing a good tele lens in the $1000-$1500 range.

I still have a Canon 30D and 100-400 L IS, because of this, but I would like to 'finish' my switch.

I know every year there are lots of rumours about a 80-400 upgrade, or 300 f4 VR ... but they never become real. Is there any chance that during 2009 appear something like that ???

If there is no Nikon upgrade, I would have to look at the 3rd party offerings ...

For example, I think that Nikon needs to release the following lenses if the want to compete with Canon in the middle tele range:

  • 80-400 AFS VR or 150-500 AFS VR: the actual offering focus too slow and the IQ it's not stellar at 400mm.

  • 300 AFS VR: they just need to add VR a keep the same price.

  • 70-200 f4 VR: cheaper, lighter, smaller and with better IQ than 70-200 2.8 VR

  • Maybe a 400 5.6 VR: light and cheap

It's simple, just mimic the lenses that work better in the competition ...

Best regards,
