Any very sharp 70-200 2.8 IS lenses **wide open**??

Often times, a telephoto is engineered to be sharpest at it's widest aperture, as this will frequently be the 'go to' aperture for sports photographers, etc. However, the general consensus seems to be that the 70-200 f/2.8 IS is somewhat soft at f/2.8, let's say at 200mm.

My question is:

1. Is this generally true (or 100% true)?

2. Do those who say this just have "bad copies" of a lens that has variable quality control?
3. How many here actually think f/2.8 is very sharp and contrasty?

Seems to me, for weddings, sports, portraits, etc., you need f/2.8 to be optimized as best it can.
