My 105 f2.5 Ais lens, bought secondhand last year, gives wonderful
results on my D700. in the 1970's it was one of the most expensive
short telephoto lenses available. It is showing signs of mechanical
wear, but optically it is so good that if Nikon should have a
brainstorm and produce a new version to celebrate 50 years of the F
mount, I would buy one.

The Nikkor 105mm f/2.5 lens is a true classic. Quoting from a Hove Photo Book (Nikon Rangefinder Camera): "the 105mm f/2.5 Nikkor-P is regarded as a landmark lens in the history of Nippon Kogaku. It substantiated the fact that they were one of the premier optical manufacturers in the world and capable of producing a truly first class lens."

I had a 105mm f/1.8 AI-S lenses, which I unfortunately used as a trade-in on another lens. As one of their trademark leaders, Nikon obviously viewed the 105mm focal length as one that demanded lens of the highest quality.

I'd agree that a anniversary issue of the 105mm lens would be a good thing (and almost certainly a great marketing move by Nikon).
