I think you just nailed it on the head with that statement. THAT is
what I just realized is my problem. I shoot soccer and cropping is a
big part of that type of photography. I am able to crop shots taken
with my 300 AF-S I that I simply cannot with the 200-400. Sadly, I
sold the 300 to fund the later. I just picked up a 400 AF-S I and
have a 300 VR on order. I will do some real world testing once I get
that 300. Man, my old 300 was crazy sharp too...and I sold it for
$1,500. Doh!

Hi Keoni;

All I know is that I still own and like my 200-400VR for a lot of things...I still think it's the best option in the 200-400VR range -- and I don't yearn for the 300VR (though I rarely need f2.8). A lot of folks like the 300 because you can add TC's to it without much of an IQ penalty, but I still prefer the functionality of the zoom for wildlife.

That said, I don't use the 200-400VR for distance work any more, especially if I have to start cropping heavily or use a TC. I now have a 500VR which is much superior for distance shots. I can crop up to 90% and still get reasonable results -- I couldn't do that with the zoom.

I'm sure your 300VR will be a good solution for you.
