200-400 VR does not equal prime lens sharpness?

I think you just nailed it on the head with that statement. THAT is what I just realized is my problem. I shoot soccer and cropping is a big part of that type of photography. I am able to crop shots taken with my 300 AF-S I that I simply cannot with the 200-400. Sadly, I sold the 300 to fund the later. I just picked up a 400 AF-S I and have a 300 VR on order. I will do some real world testing once I get that 300. Man, my old 300 was crazy sharp too...and I sold it for $1,500. Doh!

Indeed, that IS a great shot -- but presumably not a distance shot
that required additional cropping -- THAT'S the achillies heel of the
200-400VR.
