I have both

Since I got the 17-55 IS, my 17-40L just sits in my closet. The 17-55 is much sharper and has better contrast. It has much lower distortion and slightly better in CA. Its only shortcoming is flare.
BTW, the 17-85 is not even in the same league as these 2 lens on the wide side.
