I have two objections about this theory:

  • first, this is all very theoretical: what do I care if I can extract 2, 3 or more stops out of the shadows if the end result (the print) is nothing close to be worth to look at?

  • second, what about highlight DR, which in my book is a little more important than shadow DR? (I know you are going to say: if you underexpose, etc, etc.)

All this theory may very well be true (who am I to judge?), but you have to agree that this is all theory, which is hardly evidenced in real life (to me, it's the pictures that count.) I have read all the plots about the 40D and 50D differences, and if my brain doesn't have an off day, then noise performance between the two is given to be equal. That is all very nice, but no one talks about the 50D having newer sensor technology than the 40D...
