Even more puzzling was the announcement of the new Oly E 450 non-IS
model in the very category which may be hit by the new micros? The
projected high price for the Oly micro even suggests that the second
model with an EVF and maybe articulating screen may be even higher
and that Oly is targeting the high end users and trying to avoid
hurting their 4/3rds models?

Only thing preventing me from jumping into m4/3 is lack of serious enthusiast level body comparable to Canon "deka/ten"-serie or Olympus E-30. And possible in-body stabilization costs some. (but has advantage of cheaper, simpler lenses)

Also because of additional cost of good EVF and electronics required by that compared to simple basic DSLRs price competition is hard untill production volumes ramp up and initial R&D has gotten some return so in certain sense that can be really reasonable approach.

And IMO Panasonic is already covering entry level quite well with G1/GH1 so success of m4/3 isn't left up to Olympus making entry-level body.

Similarly cooperation in introducing lenses would be surely very beneficial because it can give more (+better) lenses at faster schedule which is important for system with new lens mount... Especially for chance of capturing some markets from "one leg still firmly in film -era" Canon/Nikon systems with their wide existing lens range. (also Samsung is trying to come up with their own mirrorless system)
