Correct lens for moon shots

Is there a certain minimum lens that must be used to get pictures of the moon? I have a Nikon D80 w/ 18-135 lens and SB-600 flash. I set my camera on a tripod for stability. I set camera in Auto mode, zoom out to maximum, and set the flash to -1.3. However, the picture lacks any detail whatsoever. It always come out ass a white spot on the image. The average person would know it's the moon but only because of others things in the picture.

Thanks.
