Rebel 3" VGA Screen -vs- Nikon Articulating LCD

http://www.engadget.com/2009/04/06/nikon-readies-something-for-april-14th-launch/

Leaked photos show that the successor to the Nikon D60 will come equipped with an articulating screen. Such screens are greatly advantageous for unusual compositions with Live View, and also for shooting video. However, compared to fixed-screens they tend to be smaller, and have lower resolutions as well.

It's interesting to note how Canon and Nikon made different choices. Canon went ahead with a great looking 922K pixel 3" LCD screen on the Rebel T1i. Nikon went with a fully articulating screen (not to be confused with the horrendous vari-angle screens found on Sony dSLRs).

I think Canon made the right call here. Articulating screens would be great on a camera that can do video & contrast-detect AF properly. The Panasonic GH1, for example, is a great match for an articulating screen. But Single-Lens Reflex cameras will always be behind the curve with contrast-detect AF & video. And it seems odd to add features to play to a camera's weakness, rather than its strengths. Putting an articulating screen on an SLR is like putting a hybrid engine in a hummer...
