I have reset the cam and tried to get the light to work under a variety of conditions, but no luck so far. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

check if you have:
  • AF set to AF-S
  • Check your focusing point is set in the middle.

Thats what I thought happened to my D700...Try reading/digesting p.290 of the manual, set on single servo only and AF mode selector should be pointing all the way up (solid rectangle). Hope this helps.

Don't worry about it, you should have it off anyway. It's ridiculously annoying for the subject. It's got the same module as the D3, and the D3 has no AF assist.

Don't sweat it.

have a built-in flash. When you mount a flash on the D3, e.g., Sb 800 or 900, the flash provides its own AF assist.

The reason I ask is that I needed it the other day - I was shooting in near complete darkness and didn't have my SB900 on me...

I appreciate it. I remember that my D80 functioned differently in this respect. Anyhow - at least new it will work - though I prefer not to use matrix AF - or whatever its called...

Thanks again!!!
