300 f4 afs or 80-400vr for Wildlife

I currently have a D200 w/ 18-200vr. Need more reach. I don't use a tripod at this point, and my budget is in the neighborhood of $1,600 give or take. I am interested in opinions on which lens. I would probably purchase a 1.4 teleconverter for the 300 f4 if I go that route. I would like the quicker focus and sharpness of the 300 f4, but can this be a good handheld lens for a hobbiest like myself with the D200. Maybe I will upgrade to the D300 in the future for better high ISO and autofocus. Thanks.
