yesterday I received Nikon 5700 from CDW. It has 3000... # on it. The focus is fine even in the low light conditions which I tested.

I have found that my CP5700 has focused quickly 98% of the time. I am sad that so many people have had trouble. But remember that are far more that are not having trouble and enjoying their camera.

Just to be part of the minority. I just received a laser pointer ($17 plus shipping) to assist in totally dark situations. I went into my bedroom to try a very low light situation, closed doors and windows, aimed in a dark corner and darned if that 5700 didn't grab focus in less than a second (without the laser pointer). Tried it again in an almost dark bathroom. Same problem. Grabbed focus right away. I had to go into a totally dark closet to test that laser pointer, which worked perfectly. (It has a vertical stripe by the way).

I've ordered a replacement 5700 from CDW as my 5700 has a stuck pixel. I'm just hoping the next one is as good in grabbing focus!

After reading this post, I went and tried out the focusing of my 5700 in a really dark corner (I can hardly make out any details on the LCD screen) of my room. To my surprise, it actually manage to focus very quickly ! Previously, it could not even do so in a brighter environment. The difference was that I had disabled the AF Area mode as Carmen has suggested. Could engaging the AF Area mode be the reason for the poor performance of the autofocus in low light, I wonder?

Hi Tom and Pschia..with all this talk about slow AF....I went in my room an I performed the same test I always perform (night light) and once again still NO PROBLEM as long as there is some sort of light (even tried a lit match) my camera is immediate and quick to focus.....maybe Pschia it is how an individual sets his or her camera..I guess they all should try disabling the AFarea mode!!!

Hi!
I just tried focusing in low light condition with the AFarea set to manual and I got no focus any time, then I set AFarea to Off just as sugested and it found focus instantly.

This is why Il like those forums, there is always somthing new to learn that makes your camera work better.

Thought I like to have AFarea set to manual in normal condition I now know how to get focus in low light as well.

Thanks everyone

Yes a great tip. I too prefer the manual AFarea. I tried turning it off, and as long as there is some contrast it works much better in low light. Thanks!.

Forgive the novice question, however when is AFarea for? Is is only good in the "off" mode in low light and should be on "manual" all other times? Can it be left on the "off" mode as a default and get as good results as "manual" does good light also? Please give me a brief explaination.

Thank U
