DPI on Xsi is only 72?

So from time to time I am lucky enough to make a few photo sales from phots I took with my 300D. If you right click on a photo and look at the properties and details tab it says that my photos were 180 dpi. Recently I have missed out on a few sales because they want 300dpi or better for magazines.

After doing some research on here, the way I understand dpi is that it doesn't really exist in the photo, dpi is for printing and pixels per inch (ppi) is in the photo.

So anyway, I just picked up a Xsi that has 12.2 mega pixels. Surely that would bring the dpi up to over 300 right? Well, to my surprise it shows that the Xsi images are only 72 dpi.

Am I missing something here or is this just some arbitrary number that Canon associates with all their images?

Oh, and I already checked that the image quality is set to the highest level "L".

Any thoughts?
