Anyone know the specs for the first camera to utilize the new xD picture card media?

Anyone know when we can expect this to be available?

I am looking forward to 640*480 30FPS movie mode!

Then you'd better hope it supports CF Microdrives as well. The 128 Mb cards will hold only about 120 seconds worth of video whereas the 1Gb Microdrive (useable in the 602Z) will hold (and keep up with the required data rate) about 15 Minutes worth of video. If the prices are similar to CF and SmartMedia the bigger media promised for next year will probably cost 2-3 times as much as a comparable Microdrive.

The 3800 is the only Fuji that I have heard of that will support the native xD format, it may be out for fall. Of course as other camera replacements are announced they will be supporting this format.

Will it take use of the format completely, not too sure. The video mode is not going to support 640x480 and it only shoots 2 shots for consecutive shot mode which is more of a buffer issue than xD speed.

Anyone who might know wouldn't tell you ... I expect Olympus to announce new digicams with dual (xD/SM) slots in a couple of weeks; these models will be introduced at Photokina (end of September). The same goes for Fuji, although the announcement might come earlier. I trust you've seen the manual of the rumoured "FinePix 3800" (which will probably not go by that name), the successor of the FinePix 2800?

Where can I see the manual to the 3800?

I was actually going to go out and buy the 601, but the xD put this on hold. Is there going to be a 601 xD successor?

Why would you wait on the new memory format????? Smartmedia will be here for a long time. I have a 602 which uses a microdrive and I just ordered a 2600 for my kids and a 128mb smartmedia card. The new memory format has zero impact on my decision. Smartmedia cards are here and inexpensive right now and should be here for some time to come. Microdrives and CF are already at 1GB so what is the big deal with the new format?

Fuji today introduced five new cameras, all of which use the new xD-Picture Cards that were announced earlier in the week (scroll down to learn more about those). As you can see, most of their low-end line has been updated. Those of you who just bought an S602 Zoom are probably a bit nervous now . Anyhow, here they are:

Plus, if you REALLY want to use xD, you can pop it into a compact flash adapter and use in in a CF camera like the 602. The only benefit I could see is if the faster read/write time of the xD card could speed up the 602.

The pirated version used to be at http://www.xs4all.nl/~invaders/3800pix.pdf , but now that the S304/3800 has been officially announced, there may be an official version available from Fuji's website -- I haven't checked yet. In a nutshell, the S304/3800 is the successor of the 2800 with higher resolution and xD instead of SM cards.

Sure -- expect it to be announced in January, introduced at PMA and CeBIT in February/March and becoming available about April/May 2003. Fuji replaces its digicams after about 12 months, with low-end cameras introduced in the summer and high-end models in winter.

If you think the F601 is your kind of camera, then by all means, go for it. No need to wait for the next model. SmartMedia cards will continue to be available for the forseeable future, and while the new xD cards do offer some improvements, it might not be enough to justify waiting for another 8 or 9 months.

I wouldn't count on it. The CF-adaptor has to implement the whole CF protocol which is quite an overhead. Probably the interface speed will be on par with todays CF1/2 cards but don't expect the raw performance of the XD spec memory (which really is the raw flash memory inside a small box with better connectors than smartmedia) to be transferred to the CF.

Nah, they just replaced the memory slot and did some minor upgrades
for most of them. Only the 2800 seems to have undergone a bigger
(external?) change.
I think the main benefits of 3800/S304 are the lens supports wide/tele adapters (which is very good feature for a point and shoot camera), the aperture priority mode and the 3+MP for an inexpensive price. I have purchased a 2800 just in two weeks (for a pretty low price), and these features would be also handy. Since I'm new to digital photography the 2800 should be enough for a time. If Fuji replaces the cameras so frequently then one can wait for a year or two, if he needs more.
