Camcorders can't compete with GH1, here's why.

Re: Camcorders have much faster lenses...

Hello Jay:

The high-ISO performance of the 4/3 sensor should be vastly better
than that of the 1/3" sensor, far outweighing the disadvantage of the
slower lens, especially as when shooting video it can use pixel
binning to increase the effective sensitivity.

Provided you have enough light for that slow 14-140 lens to focus accurately...Sure the larger sensor allows for more DOF and ISO signal amplification but you can't beat a native fast lens for focusing....Auto or manual...

Hello:

I haven't read all the posts but if it hasn't been mentioned lets not
forget that most camcorder have lenses in the f/1.8-f/3.0 at 40-400mm
respectfully...The slows lens of the GH1 is going to severly hamper
it, IMHO...I doubt there are too many videographers who are using
f/5.8 lenses at 280mm equiv...

In terms of DOF, a 4/3 sensor should afford roughly four stops
shallower DOF, and f/1.8 is three stops faster than f/3.5, so the
14-140 lens on the GH1 should have up to one stop shallower DOF at
the wide end, and closer to two stops at the tele end. That f/5.8 at
280mm is roughly equivalent to f/2 on a 1/3" sensor. The real
strength of the GH1 for creative DOF effects, though, probably lies
in fast prime lenses, rather than the 14-140 zoom.

The high-ISO performance of the 4/3 sensor should be vastly better
than that of the 1/3" sensor, far outweighing the disadvantage of the
slower lens, especially as when shooting video it can use pixel
