Genetics - relates to evolution.
Evolution of sensors and image perception is what we currently study.
So you are right in the center of action.

Since you are a geneticist you will know how long it took to understand the basics of signal transduction in cells and photo-receptors.

No wonder we are still struggling to establish what is a good test to measure the qualities of an artificial sensor.

Once we agree on that - we may even come up with a good idea what the next generation sensor should be able to do? I guess sensory physiology can help us out?

At least from mammal vision we know that photographic imaging is not the high end solution.....
But I digress.
