Hi all,

Just got this beauty yesterday, and I'm not getting 1080p when playing back (via mini HDMI) videos straight from camera to my full HD tv.

All I'm getting is 1080i.

Can someone confirm that they can get 1080p playback from this camera?

There is so much hype online about this camera atm, and all of it is claiming 1080p Ful HD.

Waiting to hear back from Canon Australia Tech Support. They did not have an answer.

For info, my TV is a Samsung F81 40".

It records in 1080p. I don't believe it actually outputs 1080p. You can check the files with a computer they are definitely 1920x1080 at 30 FPS progressive.

That being said do you really think you could tell the difference between 1080i and 1080p? What size screen are you using? Unless you say 65 inches or bigger I won't believe you can see the difference.

Thanks, I'll try transferring it to a thumbdrive, then playing it on a media player i bought, or maybe my PS3.

Does PS3 play H.264?

Yeah, but not wrapped in .mov. PS3 plays the .mp4 h.264 files from my Sanyo HD1010 just fine, but will not touch the SX1 files.

BTW 1080p/30 can be interlaced to 1080i/60 perfectly. And by perfectly I mean the scaler in the TV can then deinterlace it back to 1080p/30 with no loss. Literally every frame that was originally there is there again.

Also spotting the differences in progressive vs interlaced is not always a matter of size. Still shots or shots with only slow movement will not show interlacing artifacts very much. Interlacing artifacts show up mostly in fast moving scenes where tearing occurs especially if a scalar is not handling it well.

A lot of people prefer watching 720p rather than 1080i - there must be something to this progressive scan thing.

If 1080i was comparable to 1080p then 1080i would have been called FULL HD as well, but it wasn't.

Now the real problem - how do I CONVERT my .mov to MP4 (or MPEG-4, are they trhe same?), and PRESERVE my 1080p/30fps? Have tried a few programs with no success...CAN ANYONE OUT THERE HELP ME WITH THIS PROBLEM?

Is Quicktime Pro 7.6 the go? What about Photoshop CS4? Probably not i know.. but getting desperate.

What about a firmware update from Canon? Please Canon, make this camera truly ground-breaking and legendary by making more file types for recording HD Movies available!! Lets start a petition everyone! .mov is NOT GOOD ENOUGH!

My FULL HD TV (Samsung F81) cannot convert 1080i to 1080p - what TV can do that?!

You have to extract the video stream and audio streams from it. You can probably find your answer here: http://forum.doom9.org/archive/index.php/t-102064.html

It seems QT Pro might work.

I dislike Canon using .mov as a container. I have always disliked QT. It would also have been annoying if they used .wmv as a container. Canon, why can't you just use an open standard like MKV?

There is nothing wrong with 720p, wasn't ESPN using it for sports?

Your video is h.264 wrapped in an .MOV wrapper.

I use Sony Vegas, others use PowerDirector. Then there are those who don't use anything but provide advice.

Upload a sample of your unedited video to Vimeo.com, set it so the original can be downloaded, I will download it, do some editing and upload it...

My charge, one beer if you show up in Albuquerque. Pretty simple, huh?

You will get better luck if you Google for a video transcoder, not encoder or converter.

There are hordes of transcoders out there, many of them completely free. Just take your pic and try them out.

Now, I can't get into all the nitty gritty details like adjusting codec settings, multi-pass purposes, or various compression terms because that's a whole other level that you should devote your own time to if you are curious enough to learn.

I use Ulead VideoStudio 11 with excellent results when editing and converting videos.
