Thom does not have as glowing review of the 16-85 as I anticipated he
would based on my copy of this lens and the photozone.de analysis.

One of the things that I noticed with my old reviews when I started doing a more templated, rigorous review with real side-by-side testing is that I needed to tighten my standards a bit. I'm also trying to make room for a more consistent overall rating. Part of the delay in getting new reviews out was trying to establish some new guidelines for myself. As I work forward, I'll also try to work backwards to get older reviews in line with the current ones. As I noted on the front page, I'm concentrating on DX lenses first.

For example, on a one-rating scale, the 16-85mm would probably get four stars from me, the 18-200mm would now get three stars. To get a five-star rating, a lens would really just have to have no optical issues. The 200mm f/2G is an example of a lens I'd rate five, the 14-24mm may turn out to be another (still working through my assessment, and that missing filter ring is something I'm still grappling with ; ).
