I just purchased my first digital camera. Canon A590.
I also bought a 4GIG SD card.
I should mention that Stapels is selling it for $100.
Any advice/recommendations would be appreciiated.
I need to buy a case, and re-chargable batteries.

I previously bought a card reader, since Canon cameras wont be detected with Vista 64

Thanks

Great choice. I've heard that Sanyo Eneloops are good rechargable batteries. Also, just a basic Tamrac bag (or something similiar) should be fine, and you can find them for under $20. I look forward to seeing your first photos. (:

Please excuse my inane question.
How do I use the card reader?
Is a driver necessary?
If you have a Windows XP or Vista machine then you won't need to worry about drivers. Just connect the reader to your computer with a USB cable, wait for it to come up with a "Your new hardware is installed and ready to use" balloon, then insert the memory card into the card reader.

If you then open up your "My Computer" icon, the memory card will appear as another drive letter (ie, "E:") and you can open up the folders on it and drag pictures from there to anywhere on your hard drive.

Yes...get Sanyo Eneloops. Costco sell a package deal w/ charger.

Do you really want a bag? I think the A590 is small enough store in a decent-sized pocket. I keep my A720is (w/ Eneloops, of course) in the car console all the time. If I need it I'll simply throw the camera in my coat pocket, cargo shorts pocket, or decent sized shirt or vest pocket. I don't like bags.

By the way, I think that my A720 was about the last really good A-series camera. It's my hope that Canon gets back to developing really good p&s models like the A-series of past. I like these little feature-packed cameras. Make them all with (2) AA batteries and priced from about $200 - $350. Make great little cameras at this price point and I'll buy one every 6 months to a year.

Thanks to all for your informative replies.

I seem to remember, that there was software that I could install that would enable Canon cameras to be detected with Vista 64. Does anyone know of such software?

Thanks

Not sure why you want to connect the camera to your computer instead of just using your reader. You can leave the reader attached even when not used and it doesn't use battery power to download photos.

Perhaps Vista 64's Plug n Play capability isn't as good as the 32 bit OS's, but I think it should be, and in that case you don't actually need software, you just use the supplied cable which connects your camera to the USB port of the PC. The camera's image files will then appear in a folder below My Computer in file explorer. It will be a drive letter or the name of the camera (or both).

USB devices rarely require drivers these days, just connect them and they will appear where they are supposed to.

Like the other guy said, doing this requires that you turn the camera on (after you plug it in) and hence use it's battery. Up shot is you don't have to remove the card. If you are quick to copy over the new pictures and then turn the camera off it won't use much battery though.

I took my first few pictures, and viewed them on the computer with the card reader.
My concern about using the card reader is this.

The battery compartment does not look like it can stand up to many openings and closings.

For now I am using the Easy Mode. I was not able to figure somthing out however. On easy mode, is the Image stabilization on or off?

Again, thanks to all for your informative replies.

I understand what you mean. I've opened up my SD870IS' battery compartment to get out the memory card so much that it's gotten very loose, so I understand why you would want to use the camera cable. Also, if you go into any of the other modes (like P mode) you can select the image-stablization setting, and it will be like that in all modes. It's probably blocked out in Easy mode so the camera makes many of the decisions.

Just use the camera and concentrate on making good pictures. You're needlessly worrying about a hundred dollar camera. Just don't man-handle the door when you're opening and closing and it will be fine.

I mean, really, if you actually take pictures and like photography then don't you think that you'll be ready for another camera in 6 months or so any way?

Ah, good choice, it lead me to buy the G10, BUT now i am back to the A590 because it can fit in my sweatshirt pouch when I do my power-walks. I use the Canon AA rechargeables NB 3AH 2500, which last reasonably long, B&H has a four pack for 19.95, then found a thin soft case for an Olympus at Staples for $10, the other mfgrs have better cases it seems. ALSO our Staples has the SanDisk Ultra II 4GB SDHC card for 49.99. I do a lot of small videos which are surprisingly sharp for 20fps. In fact the regular Jpegs seem to be sharper than my G10's. I always carry 2 extra alkaline AAs in case the rechargeables fade; that's the beauty of this critter, it's "field expedient," you can switch the batterey types at 7/11 if you need to. The manual settings are another gift.

Canon accidentally made a great little camera, too bad the video is only 20fps.

hey maybe they stopped making this one so they could give us an f2, 24mm, 30fps, A590-B?

This morning I went to the Canon Site and downloaded a later driver. The camera is now recongnized by the computer.
I have a question.

At present I am using the Easy Mode. In this Mode is the Image Stablization on or off?

Thanks

Would someone please tell me how to go into the macro mode. I have
been looking for the flower button, but cannot find it.

Thanks
It's the "down" button on the four-way controller. It also says MF below it.
