Fool me once... but what do I do now?

Most have fraud protection-- at least in the US. You may be able to get your money back.

Olympus E-510 and a bunch of stuff to hang on it.

But if not, I think the E-330 is a better camera than the E-510 and it's cheaper. The LCD and live view A/B make this camera unique. The IQ I prefer. Find a good used one with kit lenses if you can. The old 40-150mm in particular is a good buy as a kit. E-500 can be found used for cheaper yet. They are good cameras with good IQ. Best of luck.

Thanks to EVERYONE contributing to this thread.

I read and took into consideration every single post and I'm most grateful for all your generous comments.

I do not intend to update y'all on what's happening with getting my money back and such, but let me just briefly comment the picture of the starving (I assume?) child.

This IS a photography forum, with the explicit purpose of discussing photographic gear, and judging from the picture poster's pbase gallery he does himself own and use such gear. Therefore I find it quite unnecessary commenting on the severity of the economic harm caused myself in comparison to the daily struggles of starving African people. OF COURSE losing my couple of hundreds of dollars doesn't compare – and if the purpose was to make me feel bad about wanting a camera when people are starving, the purpose wasn't really met.

Because you know, I do have a twin child that I am a regular giver to. I do give generously to charities (including Amnesty international, the red cross and Greenpeace). And I did spend all of christmas eve (and will on new year's eve too) doing voluntary work at a local homeless shelter, handing out food and christmas gifts (blankets, jackets and other gear that – this I know – will make the difference between life or death for these people as the temperature here drops well below zero centigrade).

So, Brent Lossing, feel free to tell me how you spent your christmas eve, how much you spent on christmas gifts for your loved ones and please also elaborate on why you, without knowing me or what I do for other people, felt it was appropriate to comment on my wanting a camera. Or, even better, don't bother.

To finish this off: Two days after posting this thread I just strolled into a local, usually quite expensive, camera store and found that they had dropped the price of the E-510+14-42 more than 200 dollars just over night! It was going at 3999 SEK, some 500 dollars at today's exchange rates. They had it priced at 5999 before that.

I took the plunge right away. I haven't had the time yet to even change a single setting, but I took it for a walk yesterday and I will post a few OOC jpegs in a new thread really soon.

Again, huge thanks to everyone! It is truly a blessing to be a part of these forums where you can get fast, honest and helpful responses.

Glad that it has worked out a bit better for you, mate. Any sign of getting your money back? Or part thereof?

On the other matter, I think that most of us in the first world know and understand that we are better off than many. In Oz, the poorest and least well-off are richer than the wildest dreams of Croesus ... that is, than 99% of people for 99.9% of human history; and still people moan and whinge.

My Cardiologist has said to me several times "John, what has been done to you is brutal ... "; but the day does not go past but that I am thankful that I live in a place where I have the best medical treatment available anywhere; I have access to on-going medical care that most of the rest of the world can only fantasise about; I can have these things done without having to sell my home to pay for it; AND I am thankful that I was not born in Sub-Saharan Africa (or any number of other places in this world) where I would not have survived even into early childhood.

AND keep up the good work, mate. "Greater love hath no man ... " etc applies in all sorts of situations; not just warfare ...

Gidday John!

It does seem that many of those that paid with a Visa card get their money back. I'm keeping in touch with my bank but there's holidays and such going on... so I don't know yet. Thanks for inquiring!

By the way, here are the first pics from my new E-510:

Great catch on the E-510 kit. I just bought my second E-510 for backup. Give it a few months to learn what the best settings are for your work flow. You would have had done the same "learning" with the 520.

I was disappointed at first at the image quality I was getting but then after working with the camera and trying different settings and post processing I am very happy with the quality it is capable of.

I have printed several "posters" at 24" x 36".

Maybe the Grinch left the crooks something stinky in their stocking for Christmas.

enjoy the 510

when first reading your thread last week I had assumed that you had not paid with a credit card. if you paid with visa you have a degree of protection and my, strictly personal view, would be that you are unlikely to have lost anything if you didn't receive the goods (it's pretty clear cut under such circumstances).

however if it is a bank visa debit card the contract is fundamentally different.

based on you looking to contact you bank I will make another assumption (two in one thread!) that you have a visa debit card.

if I am wrong (again) and it's a visa credit card then you should be contacting visa direct and advising them that you never received the goods so they should pay the merchant ie it's their problem.

last week I tried to research the fraud because you said it was big news, but failed to find any details at all.

Yes, (un)fortunately it was a strictly national fraud here in Sweden, meaning that no or little information is available in English anywhere. However, a couple of thousand Swedes lost their christmas presents to the hands of these gangsters, so in Sweden it made pretty big headlines.

And yes, your assumptions are right – I paid with a Visa debit card. And from what I've gathered, different banks deal with this situation in different ways. I've read about people getting their money back five minutes after phoning their bank, and about people getting dismissed totally. How my bank reacts remains to be seen as soon as the holidays are over.

Thanks for your input!

I sincerely appologize. You are correct. I have no right to go and try and put the context of your loss in with those that have nothing to lose. I am not being sarcastic, snide or whatever. The apology is sincerely meant.

I am very happy that you were able to find a way to get a new camera. After reading your post again and your summary I realize how crass and insensitive I was being.

Again. My appologies and I hope you can find it to forgive me.

Sorry to hear about the E-520 and at the same time I'm happy that you got the E-510. I've had an Olympus E-510 for about 15 months; just got a used E-500 for $215 (USD) a few weeks ago also (with low shutter activations). They are a lot of fun.

I hope you had a good Christmas.

credit card company refund your purchase? Most CC these days offer fraud protection. Or did you do that?

Hey.

I just wanted to let you know that I got my money back a week or so ago. From my bank/card company that is.

I saw just the other day that the number of filed police reports regarding this very case has reached almost 3 000, and that police estimate that the sum the culprits got away with is at least a million Euro (10 million SEK). Personally, I think that's a modest estimate.

As you might have seen too, I ended up buying an E-510 with a single kit lens at an amazing price, before I knew I'd get my money back. The money was however most welcome now as I'm kind of between jobs, so unfortunately they won't be going straight into new lenses :-(

But, all in all, I'm very happy with the outcome (of course). Thanks for taking part in this thread everyone. :-)

That's good news, congratulations! I hope that you'll soon be able to afford a new camera.

Very, very glad to hear it, mate.

Hope you enjoy your E-510. Mine serves me very well indeed.

Also my best wishes to you in the search for a new job.
