If LX3 is discontinued, wouldn't the same go for Leica D-LUX4 ?

Since these two cameras are for all practical (if not stylistic) purposes identical, one would expect that if the LX3 is discontinued, the D-LUX4 should suffer a similar fate? Why would Panasonic keep a production line going for a camera they no longer sell?

I checked around but NO such rumors are circulating for the Leica version.

Just a thought.

Leica version is more expensive and not as many people go for it because of that.

Less demand, higher supply.

EDIT: also.. are they even produced by the same people/factory?

I really don't know who's telling such a nonsense. Possibly the LX3 is out of stock at some vendors especially in the United States.

In Europe the availibilty of the LX3 isn't a theme at all. Amazon.de and a lot of other vendors have it on stock, also the black one.

Olaf.. am I to believe you, or Panasonic? I just posted on another discussion that I spoke to someone this morning from Panasonic named Jared. He said the camera was being discontinued and replaced by something in the ZS series.

Then I went to the Panasonic Direct Sales chat line and they said it was being discontinued, BUT they still had silver one's left..

You are now chatting with 'Shamiere'

Shamiere: Thank you for contacting Panasonic Direct Sales. How may I help you today?

you: I have a black LX3 on order for awhile.. but some people have been telling me that it has been discontinued.. is that true?
you: If so, what is it being replaced with?
Shamiere: They are discontinued. You can get the Silver.
you: Are they being replaced with a newer model?
Shamiere: I not have a model number yet.
you: Okay.. thanks for your help..

So I call the Panasonic sales, they say discontinued..(from Jared) I write to the Direct Sales chat person (Shamiere) and they say discontinued.. and you are telling everyone they are wrong... Do you have a better source than Panasonic?

Regards,
Joe

One of my rules: never believe a salesman if he want to sell you something.

Possibly they want to sell the silver ones, because they have produced too much of these.

But do you really think they discontinue a good selling camera that was announced only 8 month ago ?

Olaf

While I don't particularly believe that the LX3 is discontinued I wouldn't put it past any company to do something that seems ridiculous to the general public.

I could say what I've heard about this, but since some the Pana lovers here got ready to lynch me for repeating the so-called office gossip about there would be no FZ60, I now keep my office gossip to myself and let the experts here fight it out and keep my office gossip to myself.

Olaf.. from what I see, it is a "good," selling camera to the photographers.. not to the "masses." You can go to Amazon to check the rankings..From what I have seen, it is on the lower end with at least 100 cameras ahead of it.

Regards,
Joe

"there will be no LX4", I would say that fits in Panasonic's strategy and possiby they will continue it with a smaller Micro Four Thirds camera.

But I interpretated the statement of the salesman as "production will not be continued, the black ones are out of stock and you only can get a silver one".

Nothing is impossible but that would be hard to believe and as I statet already, I cannot see any sign for this in Europe.

I suggest all of us interested should go to Panasonics site "live chat" and ask the same question... then post our results!

Maybe this will end the rumors once and for all... in either case.

Personally, I think the LX3 is dead. The question is why are they so secretive in regards for a replacement. Could it be something so revolutionary that "mums the word" until PMA? Perhaps their following Apple's philosophy of not "spilling the beans".

I'm thinking longer-throw lens...

Of course if this is true... then I'm screwed if I happen to be one of the "lucky" ones who manages to get one before the new one is released.

I can see the prices tumbling on e-bay...

When I ordered my Nikon D90 at Amazon.de, they were not able to deliver it (they also could not name a delivery date). I canceled the order and bought it from another dealer, who delivered it over night.

After I bought my LX3 at Amazon.de they were out of stock for a few weeks.

What I want to say: what they cannot deliver also cannot become a bestseller on their list.

By the way: the FZ50 is currently on place 79 of the bestseller list of Amazon.de and it is on stock (in black).

And for which they released a firmware update only weeks ago...

Spending money and resources on firmware updates for a camera you no no longer make is reasonable if it's an expensive high-end model with a demanding professional user base paying pro support prices, but it makes no sense at all for a consumer camera like the LX3.

I had it from a reliable source in Canon that the G10 has not been well received by those who really count in the photography world. The LX3 with its unique sensor, Leica lens and outstanding picture quality has become the compact of preference in virtually every pro's bagg.....

The only way Canon could get know-how access to the advanced technologies Panasonic pioneered was to buy everything associated with, plus the global stock of LX3......

What Canon will do with the LX3 is not clear yet.....placing a Canon badge on it is not likely......it could happen that stupid photographers notice that its in fact a Panasonic LX3, alhough there is a part who believe that will never happen....

One thing is sure, I bought a spare LX3 and will get a G11....just to see how it perform...;-)

Assuming you're right, I think I read somewhere that the big cameramakers don't want the compact cameras to be too good because they are making more money from the big ones, selling more lenses and other things. So again if your right they might have paid Panasonic a lot of money for it to dissapear from the market.

Oh I do like a good conspiracy theory with mysterious goings-on preferably involving assorted Secret Services, car crashes in tunnels, lurkers on grassy mounds and slush money from the Camera Mafia. Ok, so I made up the Camera Mafia bit ;-)

Hi all,

Just bought my LX3 today in England. Plenty of stock in Jessops, apparently. Funnily enough, I spoke to Panasonic UK last week re the release dates for the TZ6 & TZ7 as they are listed on the web site but these won't be released until later this month & the middle of March and released one at a time.
