I'm not sure that's the case. The 5D2 uses the same sort of lower grade of amplifier/ADC electronics as in the xxD series, with the result that there is much more banding noise in the 5D2 than there is in the 1 series. Banding noise is much more visually objectionable than its contribution to the noise std deviation would indicate, since it is coherent over multiple pixels along a line. Two cameras with the same noise std dev can have different amounts of banding noise which are subleading contributions to the overall read noise; the one with the lower pattern noise will be judged visually to have much lower noise in shadows even though as measured by the std dev there is no difference. One can of course measure the banding contribution separately but it is not typically done in reviews.
