Hi all! Wow there are so many great photos on this forum and I am
glad to be a part of it. This is a photo of the Andromeda Galaxy
(M31) which is our closest big neighbor floating in space

It is a great image of the Andromeda Galaxy! Thanks a lot.

The Andromeda Galaxy is the biggest member of our local group of galaxies. Our own Milky Way has the same mass but fewer stars and the third one is the Triangulum Galaxy (M33) at a distance of close to 3 mill light years. The distance to the M31 is now believed to be approx 2.5 mill light years.

Our Local Group consists of these three big galaxies and some 30 other smaller galaxies. M31 is moving towards our own Milky Way at a speed of more than 100 km/sec and eventually they will probably merge and form a much bigger elliptical galaxy. The first "collision" is estimated to happen in 2.5 billion years.
