One option is to stop the lens down, say to f/11, describe it that way to the camera i.e. as an f/11 lens, then use liveview - it will brighten the image to compensate.

Of course, also let Nikon know that we'd all like liveview to automatically brighten when we stop the lens down for DOF check. It's just a firmware omission...
