Fun with D700 and high ISO

D700 ISO performance isn't limited to low light situations - its nice to have fast shutter speeds while zooming 400mm handheld.

I know there are much better hummingbird photos posted in this forum previously, but today I appreciated the D700's ability to take handheld photos of a Hummingbird on impulse who popped up in my backyard, without flash and achieve pretty good results.

In this case, I shot RAW, at ISO 1250, at f7.1 shutter 1/1600th using 80-400mm (at 400mm) to get this hummingbird. No flash or tripod set up. I have frozen hummingbird wings before, generally requires shutter speeds 1/3000th or faster (or flash technique to freeze their wings). Processed in Adobe PS4.

This would have been completely impossible with my D2x due to noise. I've lost potential wildlife shots in Alaska this summer with my D2x because I couldn't get enough shutter speed handheld - In these cases I didn't have time to set up a tripod as the moment was fleeting - either there was too much camera shake or too much noise if I took the ISO high. Had I owned a D700 in July, I would have gotten more and higher quality pictures.

I still can't get over how crisp D700 images are at ISO 1250-1600.
