With the pop up flash in commander mode and a sb900, i can only get the flash rate at about 1 a second, i have the pop up flash at -3 so don't seem to be waiting for it to recycle, is this normal or is there a setting or work round, i have a cord but usefulness of pop up a little diminished if this is the case. Still good to have!

Well the flash will emit some kind of information to the remote flash ... info as the iTTl etc. So this light being sent to the reomte is not a flash but rather the information that iTTL reads. So the acutal flash is not ignited from the commander.

The iTTL will not work like it did in the days of film. It sends this irst flash to take a light reading of the surrounding area. In the same time it sends throgh the CLS the information to the remote flash.

I would not bother about the this preflash.

This setting is available on all flashes of the CLS programme that can be turned into a commander flash.

when you set your built in flash to "--" it doesn't come out in the exposure. It fires just right before the shutter opens.

It DOES have to fire because that light will serve as a signal to fire the off-camera flashes. The whole concept of the CLS goes around this.

so, you are saying, that if i stand in front of a mirror, and shoot my d700, no light from the onboard flash will be captured in the shot?

i just got my d700, and i'm trying to eliminate the light coming from the onboard flash to appear in the capture. I found the "--" setting in the manual, but it does not seem to work as i thought it whould, or i just got it wrong all together.

You will see it in a mirror, but not on usual subjects at "normal" distances.

To "eliminate" the light you can use the Nikon SG-3ir Panel, it works great.

Also, an SU-800 might work but at a very different price :-)

ok

so -- is the right setting and better than my -3 , still will only fire about one frame per second, i read that it want do continuous, but in single shot the camera want even fire without the flash like locked for the second!

no big deal, have cord first thing I bought as experimented in shop, just thought doing something wrong, starting to build up flash guns now the sb400 is great as a little off cam flash on a cord, gilden style.

the 900 took some good exposures at a recent trip to red sea. and will be getting a 600 today as back up and walk about as off to Yucatan on sunday to get out of london. When is spring break and dont say spring??

The battery cassette holder is very good better than canons, with the right rechargeables recycle 1 sec...

Might have to go back to canon for the 5d if a d800 dont come out soon as signed to gallery stock and they like MF, big file sizes, i know it dont take better pics but that is what they want.

best dougie
