I just found a site that explains quite well the variation in DOF you saw. Check the five graphs in the table a few pages down -

I think he made an error in the text for graph D. He says, "The front limit of the DOF area is closer ... to the camera now." I believe he meant, "The front limit of the DOF area is further ... from the camera now."
