For a recent 1.5 week trip to family plus some sightseeing in Paris, I just brought along the 5DII + 24-70 f2.8. Worked great.

I was hesitant not bringing a flash, but didn't need it. The 5DII did great at ISO 3200 indoors and ISO 6400 outdoors for evening shots.

I was also considering bringing a wider lens, for Paris especially, but the 24-70mm was wide enough.

And besides it was so cold I couldn't imagine changing lenses... :-)

I just came back from a photography trip to New Mexico and have once
again demonstrated to myself that I was carrying way too much gear. I
ended up using my 5D MKII mostly with the 24-105 mm lens. The 50 mm
f1.4, 16-35 mm, and 100-400 got minimal use and the rest (70-200, 24,
35, 85, 100 Macro) none at all. My backup kit (actually E-520 and
E-420 Olympus SLRs) got little use. I may still wish to take an E-420
with the 25 mm pancake as a walkaround kit when walking about town
and not wanting to carry the big camera. I have done the same on
prior trips having a 4x5 camera, medium format, and 35 mm film and
digital on the same trip. This is my first photography trip in which
I have gone completely digital.

So try to talk me into some sense or else reveal your travel
insanity! What is your travel kit when on a photography trip, and
what is it on , lets say, a business trip with a free day? Also what
do you use for a camera bag?

Thanks.

Sincerely,

Hany.

and lens cleaner.

When on business trips. One trip was 2 weeks, another trip was 4 days. Works well was I don't have that much time to shoot.

Next time I'm leaving the extra battery behind, have never needed it.

I am also planning an extended trip, 6-12 months, with many high altitude hiking, 4000m. I will take a 5D (or buy a new 5D II), plus the 16-35 I, 70-200/4 IS and a Keno 1.4TC. (plus a small Metz flash, ultra light weight Gitzo+RRS tripod, ...)

I am debating whether to take the 50/1.2 or 24-105/4. On a trip, I enjoy taking portraits of local people, with a shallow depth of view. That would need the 50/1.2.

I have on numerous shorter trips, when size and weight is not that critical, I took both 85/1.2II and 24-105/4 plus the other two lenses and two 5D's. Perfect. Not this time.

Planning, thinking, ...

I've recently returned from a 12 month trip, mostly in South &
Central America. I took a Canon 5D, 16-35 II, 24-105 & 70-200 f4 IS,
tripod & small flash. You can read a detailed review of the equipment
I took and how I backed up all those photos here
