Looks likes its time for Sony to update their 70-200mm ƒ 2.8. It's
overpriced and overdue IMO.

Well, it the tamron is much better than the Sony's, no need to worry about sony's price, just get the tamron. In another hand the review they made of the sonuy at 70/2.8 and 200/2.8 does not match the results I have with the sony at same aperture and focal.
