Yes, I guess luck has to be on your side.
I bought a Sigma 24-70 yesterday, as one of my local dealers had a great
special going on it, but returned it a few hours later.
I see lots of praise about this being a sharp lens, but I found mine to be
quite a bit softer than my 18-200 VR. I tested both on a tripod at a few
common focal lengths & apertures. In the process, as I had not actually
thoroughly tested any of my lenses before, found my 18-200 to be much
better than I thought, comparing well to my 35mm f/2 and 50mm AF f/1.4.

Being so disappointed with the 24-70, I treated myself to the Sigma 10-20.
What a fun lens!
