Assuming you have some experience and technical skill, you are no
different from the pro. he shoots -plenty- of shots to get one good
one. This is the big secret to photography - the more you shoot, the
more chance of getting that good one.

Actually, the better I get, the less I need to shoot to get great shots. While this is a good rule for beginners... it does not in any way reduce the importance of trying to do it right the first time. You should always be trying to get the best shot, every frame. If you do that, in time, you will learn you don't have to shoot as much to get great shots.
