If you are limited by the lens, the better sensor offers minimal advantage. Everyone raves about the 24-70 and it is a fine zoom. 90% of the images created on my site were done with it and a Fuji S5. However, the d700 makes short work of it at anything less than 5.6. My 50mm 1.8 is MUCH sharper at 2.8 than is the 24-70 lens. My contention is that the lens is the limiting factor and that is why there is not a more dramatic difference in the two images.
