D90 @ USMC Museum

That is your first outing?........hummm.......
Are you serious?

Well, I will take you at your word and say you doing fine, very good - exceptional in fact.

When you are ready for specific comments on a particular shot (or few), post those and folks will provide input.

First outing? You are a fast learner.

GK, this was in fact my first outing. I've been studying my manual, the DSLR for Dummies book by Busch (as recommended by dpreview in my first thread) and stalking DPReview, for a few weeks now.

All the photos were taken in Manual mode to see if I could apply what I have learned. Please let me know if there is anything I could have done better.

Ok, this was my first 'outing' since entering the photography realm a
few weeks ago. C&C welcome!

I ONLY took the pictures of the USMC Museum. There are 3-4 photos on page two of the photostream that I DID NOT TAKE.

Gixxerkitten;

You are to be commended. Your initial learning curve was steep and intense but you show yourself to be a "worthy Student". I tried to get a Karate Kid movie reference in there but failed.

I can't look at such a lenghty list of photos and provide specific suggestions. I did look at the small pics and I was pleased by the compositions. I looked at a few larger sizes and was pleased by the lighting, color and detail.

There is nothing specific that I can suggest you do differently at this point. You are miles ahead of where most people are after their first outing. And the fact that you are using Manual is very impressive.

Gixxerkitten;

You will be fine. If I suggest anything at this point, it would be to post one or two shots that impress or please you and why they do - even from this series. Tell us how you took the pic, ask the forum to be kind and then see what you get back. That way folks can get very specific and you will get solid critic. You should get a ton of comments like your first help me posts. I am surprised no one has commented on these.

Stay the course. Post more. Your doing great.

Those are some nice pics! My (well I call it mine it's my g/f's xmas present) d90 should be arriving today :) I can only wish my first pics would turn out that good. I've been reading alot on here and reviews too. Very nice work! I like seeing what the D90 can do.

Thanks folks. I'll start posting individual pics and request comment.

Has anyone here purchased an expodisc to set white balance or does everyone simply use paper?

Try and work some more on the composition, take your time (if possible) and reflect on it to get even better results.

Keep it simple - enough is technical

Outstanding photos.
As a former Marine (Captain), I really appreciate the photos.

Thanks,
There are no 'former' Marines Sir! Semper Fi! The museum is awesome. Glad you liked the photos.

got a chance to visit the Marine Corps museum (it's at Quantico, VA., right?) during my 26 years in the Corps. But when I see gorgeous, well composed images such as these, it certainly gives me a feel for the place.

Great job - you've captured it well!

Thanks for your service, Sir. My husband served 21.5 years and retired in '05. I have to say, the museum is overwhelming! After about five minutes of standing in the main hall, it brought me to tears. I'd be happy to post more photos if you'd like. The exhibits are so life-like that they make you feel like you are 'there' in whatever moment you are seeing at the time.

Are a good example of why one shouldn't use flash unless absolutely
necessary:

I totally agree with you. This was my first outing with my camera. Until I took these two photos, I did not have a clear understanding of ISO and Shutterspeed...now I actually 'get it'. I am REALLY/TRULY new to photography. Thanks for posting those two photos.

Like some newbies, I could have easily put a post on the board requesting assistance with shooting in a museum without ever having made the attempt. Had I done so, I would have never been able to apply what I had already read. Prior to going to the museum I could very easily recite the definitions of ISO and Shutterspeed, but was clueless as to their meanings. There is something to be said for gaining my own experience. As you say eNo, "test everything."

Not sure what my next lesson will be, but I'll know it when I find it.
