I did a small (and not completely scientific) experiment a few weeks
ago (can't find the lik quickly now) asking people to rate output
images from several cameras for image quality. The judgement of IQ
showed a stronger correlation with detail than it did with noise
(admittedly for a small sample). People who want to make IQ and noise
synonymous have simply got it wrong.

I think a more comprehensive viewpoint would be one where noise and subject detail compete at various spatial frequencies.
