Say there is 4 electrons of read noise.

If you do the hardware bin of two pixels into one, the total charge
has a read noise of 4 electrons. If you bin them in software, the
read noise is the square root of 4 squared plus 4 squared, or the
square root of 32, or 5.66. 4 is 29% less than 5.66.
