Concert photography with remote strobes

I am a budding concert photographer, and I am working with a local concert hall (capacity around 1000 people) on capturing future performances. I have had fairly good success at this venue using f/2.8 zooms with my Canon 5D and no flash. Lately I've been thinking about using some remote strobes to help with the overall poor and inconsistent lighting.

I only have experience with AlienBees in a studio as far as remote flash goes. Being budget conscious, what would your recommendations be for the hardware? Number of strobes, type, placement, and method of wireless?

Thanks so much for your help.
