Is that price possibly for real?

The economy is collapsing and they want to charge 8 grand for this camera? Did they somehow miss the memo that commercial photographers are in a world of hurt with all the ad and marketing dollars being frozen?

I guess now we know what the "Big" part of the announcement was -- the price!

Ya, that price is dubious. They will probably get that for a month or two until the "gotta have it now" demand is met, but after that I predict they won't be able to sustain any higher of a price than the 1dsm3... my bet is 6600 typical price by April.

...lets me realistic here. You can save a nickle and put it down on a nice Nikkor 500 f/4 VR:)

D700 :: D300 :: D70
Nikkor 200-400 f/4 AF-S VR ED
Nikkor 300 f/2.8 AF-S VR ED N
Nikkor 200 f/2 AF-S VR ED
Nikkor 24-70 f/2.8 AF-S ED N
Nikkor 14-24 f/2.8 AF-S ED N

Everything's available online at the Canadian site (www.nikon.ca), including a brochure and full specs, but with a MSRP of $9449.95 CDN. Yikes!

Thank-you, but I'll limp along with my D300 or film until I can justify that price tag.

Well, I guess I had best look to get rid of D300 and get a second D3! FWIW,...and to each their own,...I'd never pay any one $8000 for a camera,...no matter what it does!

A modular design is what we need,....something that is upgradeable as technlogy evolves.

Man!,...Nikon must know something we don't,....as in, the files from the D3X will really knock your socks off!!

Cheers for those on the pre-order list!

JMD
...D2X x2 - WT-2A capable
...ITP 2.0 Pro embedded
...Nikon forever~

The suprising thing to me is the December 2008 availability.

The $8000 is high as stated above.

The presss release indicates 1600 has no noise as I read it.

For $8000 they better not have any noise at 1600.

The only way to go will be to wait for the D700x ( which I would buy at 4000-4500 ).

Lets see what Red has this wednesday.

I agree 8 grand wow. What will they market next with the camera? Thats almost a year's worth of mortgage paymenst for me. My guess with the economy going south the price will drop significantly. That might work in our favor. But then who can afford a luxury like that for picture taking with rising unemployment and IRA's going into the toilet I suspect they might even suspend production if the retail sales remain dismal for the camera. Time will tell.

I'm sure they will price it as $4,999 in few months time. People now think they got it at a bargain at almost 40% off the price!

...then it will sell like hotcakes. LOL!

I the great words of sponge Bob square pants....."good luck with that.."

Nikon forever... Babe!

So who's the market?

How many folks will not buy a D3 and go with the D3x? How many will buy a D3x and not buy (or thank of buying) a MF? It is a lot more than the D3, but a lot less than the MF cameras, and you may already have the lens!!

Wow, I think nikon just raised the bar on dumb moves 2008.

Take a D3, change the sensor, board, firmware and somehow that cost 3K more? It's not even like the manufacturing price of the different parts is any different.

Really have to wonder if this is a typo or what, it should be exactly the same price as the D3. Everything is the same, just trade some ISO and FPS for some pixels.

They are definitely shooting themselves in the foot on this. Maybe they didn't get the memo about the Sony A900 existing, or even the Canon 5DII with it's measly 21MP.

Canon has to be enjoying this. Now they can plot making the 1DsIV cost 8K afterall.

  • Same Sensor
  • Same performance
  • Built-in IS with all lenses
  • Smaller body (or you can get a VG if you like)
  • Less than 1/2 price!
  • Won't mount your Nikon Lenses though. . .

Oh, I picked up the world-class Minolta 28-135/4-4.5, 70-210/4, and the very nice 50/1.4 for $700 total on ebay. When I add a new Sigma 12-24 I'll have an incredible landscape kit for about 1/2 the price of the D3x (with no lenses!)

to release something that was actually worth 8000 and retained the superhigh ISO quality of the D3.
