i am justing switching to dslr. i can get a new xti for $370 with kit lens. Is this a decent camera at fair price. Do you recommend extended warranty. thanks

the camera is good, but the 18-55 IS lens is much better. I purchased the XTi last year for $550... and am just upgrading to the 50D so i can have two bodies during my children's sporting events.

I prefer the XTi for a beginner now because it is a great camera to learn on and eventually if you decide to upgrade the cost will be less. Also, as many have said in earlier posts, it is the glass that is the better investment.

Also, (memory card cost is nearly neglible) but XTi and xxD cameras use CF. if you don't need live view then consider the XTi.

Yes last April I had to choose between the brand new XSi or XTi. I chose the XTi because of the cheaper price, plus I did not want live view or need 12megapixels.

So far it has been great to learn on. Getting good glass is a much better investment in my opinion. Good luck.

did the 18-55 IS come with your xti for $550? thanks

I purchased the XTi + Lens Kit (but 18-55 non IS) on Amazon for about $600 last April. The prices have gone down since then I believe. The non-IS version isn't bad to start on, the but IS version is optically better, plus image stabilization. Good luck.

That is a great price on an SLR. personally, I don't buy the warranties. I'm a camera junky and have had many cameras. Only one to die was my first digital. A Epson PhotoPC that died about 5 years after I bought it.

Hi..

why dont you look at the XS kit in live.com cashback...the discount is at 30% now and you may get the XS for as little as 329$(from flashpointcameras).

i recently bought a XSi for 465.50$ using Live.com cashback in ebay from the same seller(cashback is at 30% btw...saved a cool 200$).

If you are unaware of live.com cashback...search in this forum...there are couple of thread that will help you

Cheers,
FL

Make sure you are buying from a reputable dealer. If not, a good price isn't worth the hassle.

I currently own this camera and I'm very happy with it (you can see examples of photos taken with this camera at my website). You can easily print up to A3+ sizes. Make sure you buy good lenses. This is by far more important than the body you buy.
