I'm waiting for SX1-IS hits the shelves.

You obviously live in a country where you can see it try it and return it. I have to buy sight unseen which makes a big difference when you are spending twice as much as in America.

I load down the full manual (SX1 .. since 4 weeks), read and think .. and buy or buy not. Opinion of other people = 0.00 cents for me.
Most of them are paid for that what they write :-} ...

Yeah, that seems to be the way it works in de US. You can read it over here all the time. People buy 3 items, use them for a couple of weeks and return the items they don't like.

Doesn't work like that in Europe. Bought it == bought it. The only way to get rid of it is Ebay.
Usually I don't buy a camera before it is reviewed.
Usually I buy a camera and make my own thoughts about it.
I don't need the opinion of other people - I have to use the camera,
I have to pay the camera - why should I hear/read what others say?

I have one (R1) and it is nice. I'm a wide angle type guy. Have an 828 also. The R1's macro diesn't focus as close as the 828 and also it doesn't do movies - glad to have both. The 828 has a cool feature that can be set to do stills or movies in posterization (or level separation) mode, in camera. Have you tried looking for a used R1? I got one that way when my first was stolen.

I also want the SX1-IS, waiting . . .

I feel the F828 was the pinnacle of small sensor cameras as far as features and build quality. Unfortunately the image quality left much to be desired and the movie quality is also sub-par. That's too bad because if size is not a limiting factor, there may never be a better built digicam.

My impression is that the R1 in the Creme de la Creme of the DSLR-like cameras.

"G1 hasn't matured yet, with basic kit lenses only. Perhaps in a few months time it will feature some serious optics.

Canon SX1 looks to be what I need."

How much longer has the SX1 "matured" versus the G1? Suggest you do some more camera research before going public.

I won't argue with that Yehuda, but the R1 is an APS-C, not a small sensor camera.

I know how you feel about eBay, but unless you are considering one of the micro four-thirds in the future, it's doubtful there will ever be another camera like the R1.
